    This report is presented to the Antenatal to Three Initiative (ATTI) of the Tallaght West Childhood Development Initiative (CDI). It outlines the findings of a short baseline research into interagency working as it pertains to children in the antenatal to three years age cohort and their families in the four communities of Tallaght West, (Brookfield, Killinarden, Jobstown and Fettercairn).The report represents the first key output of the evaluation process of ATTI. The purpose of the research was to gather a comprehensive picture of the nature and extent of interagency working relating to children and families in the ante-natal to three cohorts. It was envisaged that this would, in turn, enable ATTI stakeholders to:understand current levels of interagency working and identify how ATTI could further support the development of interagency working in support of ante-natal to three;connect with service providers' perspectives on interagency working – both current experiences and future aspirations; andIdentify a baseline of current interagency working in Tallaght West against which to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of ATTI in the coming years

    'How are our kids?' It's a simple and straightforward question - one that any parent in Ireland will occasionally ask. In the case of Tallaght West this question is particularly urgent. The research presented in this document shows that the majority of children in Tallaght West are carrying a disproportionate burden of the inequality and poverty whichexists in Irish society as a whole - at least one in three children in this area is likely to beliving in poverty. Before the parents and guardians of these children can answer 'our kids are doing well' change is required and that change must be lasting.This research is part of the Childhood Development Initiative in Tallaght West. We are asking 'how are our kids?' because we know that, on various levels, many are not doing well and we are determined to do something about it. We want to know how these children and families are coping in the midst of challenging circumstances. We want to know exactly what conditions exist that support their developmental capacities, so that these can be built upon. We want to obtain a better understanding of what their actual needs are so that we can advocate for, and put in place, services that meet those needs

    Uric acid enhances longevity and endurance and protects the brain against ischemia

    Among mammals, there is a positive correlation between serum uric acid (UA) levels and life span. Humans have high levels of UA because they lack a functional urate oxidase (UOX) enzyme that is present in shorter lived mammals. Here, we show that male and female mice with UOX haploinsufficiency exhibit an age-related elevation of UA levels, and that the life span of female but not male UOX+/− mice is significantly increased compared to wild-type mice. Serum UA levels are elevated in response to treadmill exercise in UOX+/− mice, but not wild-type mice, and the endurance of the UOX+/− mice is significantly greater than wild-type mice. UOX+/− mice exhibit elevated levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, reduced brain damage and improved functional outcome in a model of focal ischemic stroke. Levels of oxidative protein nitration and lipid peroxidation are reduced in muscle and brain tissues of UOX+/− mice under conditions of metabolic and oxidative stress (running in the case of muscle and ischemia in the case of the brain), consistent with prior evidence that UA can scavenge peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radical. Our findings reveal roles for UA in life span determination, endurance and adaptive responses to brain injury, and suggest novel approaches for protecting cells against injury and for optimizing physical performance.España, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte EX2009–091

    A temperate former West Antarctic ice sheet suggested by an extensive zone of bed channels

    Several recent studies predict that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet will become increasingly unstable under warmer conditions. Insights on such change can be assisted through investigations of the subglacial landscape, which contains imprints of former ice-sheet behavior. Here, we present radio-echo sounding data and satellite imagery revealing a series of ancient large sub-parallel subglacial bed channels preserved in the region between the Möller and Foundation Ice Streams, West Antarctica. We suggest that these newly recognized channels were formed by significant meltwater routed along the icesheet bed. The volume of water required is likely substantial and can most easily be explained by water generated at the ice surface. The Greenland Ice Sheet today exemplifies how significant seasonal surface melt can be transferred to the bed via englacial routing. For West Antarctica, the Pliocene (2.6–5.3 Ma) represents the most recent sustained period when temperatures could have been high enough to generate surface melt comparable to that of present-day Greenland. We propose, therefore, that a temperate ice sheet covered this location during Pliocene warm periods

    Promise and ontological ambiguity in the In Vitro Meat imagescape: From laboratory myotubes to the cultured burger

    In vitro meat, also known as cultured meat, involves growing cells into muscle tissue to be eaten as food. The technology had its most high profile moment in 2013 when a cultured burger was cooked and tasted in a press conference. Images of the burger featured in the international media and were circulated across the internet. These images – literally marks on a two-dimension surface - do important work in establishing what in vitro meat is and what it can do. A combination of visual semiotics and narrative analysis shows that images of in vitro meat afford readings of their story that are co-created by the viewer. Before the cultured burger, during 2011, images of in vitro meat fell into four distinct categories: cell images, tissue images, flowcharts, and meat in a dish images. The narrative infrastructure of each image type affords different interpretations of what in vitro meat can accomplish and what it is. The 2013 cultured burger images both draw upon and depart from these images types in an attempt to present in vitro meat as a normal food stuff, and as ‘matter in place’ when placed on the plate. The analysis of individual images and the collection of images about a certain object or subject – known as the imagescape – is a productive approach to understanding the ontology and promise of in vitro meat and is applicable to other areas of social life

    Use of Serial Smartphone-Based Assessments to Characterize Diverse Neuropsychiatric Symptom Trajectories in a Large Trauma Survivor Cohort

    The authors sought to characterize adverse posttraumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS) symptom trajectories across ten symptom domains (pain, depression, sleep, nightmares, avoidance, re-experiencing, anxiety, hyperarousal, somatic, and mental/fatigue symptoms) in a large, diverse, understudied sample of motor vehicle collision (MVC) survivors. More than two thousand MVC survivors were enrolled in the emergency department (ED) and completed a rotating battery of brief smartphone-based surveys over a 2-month period. Measurement models developed from survey item responses were used in latent growth curve/mixture modeling to characterize homogeneous symptom trajectories. Associations between individual trajectories and pre-trauma and peritraumatic characteristics and traditional outcomes were compared, along with associations within and between trajectories. APNS across all ten symptom domains were common in the first two months after trauma. Many risk factors and associations with high symptom burden trajectories were shared across domains. Both across and within traditional diagnostic boundaries, APNS trajectory intercepts, and slopes were substantially correlated. Across all domains, symptom severity in the immediate aftermath of trauma (trajectory intercepts) had the greatest influence on the outcome. An interactive data visualization tool was developed to allow readers to explore relationships of interest between individual characteristics, symptom trajectories, and traditional outcomes ( http://itr.med.unc.edu/aurora/parcoord/ ). Individuals presenting to the ED after MVC commonly experience a broad constellation of adverse posttraumatic symptoms. Many risk factors for diverse APNS are shared. Individuals diagnosed with a single traditional outcome should be screened for others. The utility of multidimensional categorizations that characterize individuals across traditional diagnostic domains should be explored
